SDLP Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan

THE SDLP’s Mark H Durkan has said he is honoured to have been selected as Chair of the Assembly’s All Party Group on Rare Disease at its inaugural meeting last week.

Said the Foyle MLA: “I am delighted that I’ve been selected as Chair of the Rare Disease APG in the Assembly.

“It is crucial that the 1 in 17 individuals living with rare diseases across the North are not disadvantaged because of the rarity of their condition.

“I hope the establishment of this group alongside the Rare Disease Strategy will help improve treatment, help with faster diagnoses times and increase awareness around rare disease.

“I’m pleased that this under-represented group now have a forum via Stormont where their voices can be heard.

“I look forward to working alongside the Northern Ireland Rare Disease Partnership Charity and other members to progress the framework of support and essential reform for people, and their families, living with rare conditions.”
