Five more deaths, 5,023 new cases in North

THE Department of Health has announced five further Covid-19-related deaths in the past 24 hours in the North of Ireland.

Deaths are measured by recording those who died within 28 days of receiving a positive result in a test for Coronavirus.

The total number of deaths linked to Covid-19 in North of Ireland recorded by the Department of Health since the start of the pandemic is at 3,077.

None of these latest deaths were recorded in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area.

Today’s data from the Department of Health shows there has been a further 5,023 positive cases of Coronavirus in the North of Ireland, a rise of 1,091 on figures given yesterday for Sunday.

It includes cases confirmed from samples taken in previous days, not necessarily just in the latest 24-hour reporting period.

As of today, the number of positive cases confirmed in the past seven days was 30,808.

The statistics show that in the past 24 hours there has been a further 235 Covid-19 cases in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area, a rise of 48 on figures given yesterday for Sunday.

Over the past seven days, there were 1,554 cases recorded in the Derry and Strabane Council area.

The infection rates within Derry and Strabane remains the third lowest of all 11 councils in the North of Ireland with 1,028.4 cases per 100,000.

Bed occupancy across all hospitals is at 104 per cent.

The Department of Health now records that 198 people (mostly in hospitals) have died from Coronavirus in the Derry City and Strabane Council area.

There are currently 393 patients with Covid-19 in hospital here.

There are 21 patients with Covid-19 being treated in intensive care units, with 18 people on ventilators.

There are 44 people being treated in Altnagelvin Hospital with Coronavirus with five people in intensive care.

The figures show that 10.86 per cent of beds in Altnagelvin Hospital are occupied by people with Coronavirus and it is running at 4.74 per cent over capacity for beds.

The Department of Health reports that 213 care homes in the North of Ireland are dealing with an outbreak of Coronavirus, with 1,084 closed cases of Covid-19 in care homes here.

In the Western Trust area, 39 of its 67 care homes are dealing with a Coronavirus outbreak.

A total of 3,652,360 vaccines for Covid-19 had been administered in the North of Ireland as of Monday.
