Two further deaths, 2,922 new cases in North

THE Department of Health has reported two further Covid-19-related deaths in the past 24 hours in the North of Ireland.

Deaths are measured by recording those who died within 28 days of receiving a positive result in a test for Coronavirus.

The total number of deaths linked to Covid-19 in North of Ireland since the start of the pandemic is at 3,027.

Sadly, one of these latest deaths was recorded in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area.

Today’s data from the Department of Health shows there has been a further 2,922 positive cases of Coronavirus in the North of Ireland, a fall of 498 on figures given yesterday for Monday.

It includes cases confirmed from samples taken in previous days, not necessarily just in the latest 24-hour reporting period.

As of today, the number of positive cases confirmed in the past seven days was 27,934.

The statistics show that in the past 24 hours there has been a further 210 Covid-19 cases in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area, a fall of 125 on figures given yesterday for Monday.

Over the past seven days, there were 2,747 cases recorded in the Derry and Strabane Council area.

The infection rates within Derry and Strabane is still the highest of all councils in the North of Ireland, and has fallen now to 1,817.9 cases per 100,000.

Bed occupancy across all hospitals is now up to 108 per cent.

The Department of Health records that 193 people (mostly in hospitals) have died from Coronavirus in the Derry City and Strabane Council area.

There are currently 439 patients with Covid-19 in hospital here.

There are 29 patients with Covid-19 being treated in intensive care units, with 24 people on ventilators.

There are 47 people (down three on yesterday’s figures) being treated in Altnagelvin Hospital with Coronavirus with six people in intensive care.

The figures show that 12.54 per cent of beds in Altnagelvin Hospital are occupied by people with Coronavirus and it is running at 2.85 per cent over capacity for beds.

The Department of Health reports that 205 care homes in the North of Ireland are dealing with an outbreak of Coronavirus, with 1,045 closed cases of Covid-19 in care homes here.

In the Western Trust area, 29 of its 68 care homes are dealing with a Coronavirus outbreak.

A total of 3,593,453 vaccines for Covid-19 had been administered in the North of Ireland as of Wednesday.

Of that total, 1,407,324 were first doses, 1,302,313 were second doses and the remaining were third doses.

There have been 864,482 booster vaccines delivered.
