Fifteen more deaths, 30,423 new cases in North

THE Department of Health has reported 15 more Covid-19-related death in the North of Ireland between midnight on December 30 and midnight on January 3.

Ten of these deaths have been recorded outside of the current reporting period

Deaths are measured by recording those who died within 28 days of receiving a positive result in a test for Coronavirus.

The total number of deaths linked to Covid-19 in North of Ireland since the start of the pandemic is now 2,995.

None of the latest deaths was recorded in the Derry City and Strabane Council area with its death toll from the virus (mostly in hospitals) still at 189.

Today’s data from the Department of Health shows there has been a further 30,423 positive cases of Coronavirus in the North of Ireland between midnight on December 30 and midnight on January 3.

This is the highest recorded figures since the start of the pandemic in 2020.

It includes cases confirmed from samples taken in previous days, not necessarily just in the latest 24-hour reporting period.

As of today, the number of positive cases confirmed in the past seven days was 50,627, a rise of 20,000 cases on the previous seven days.

The statistics show that in the past four days there has been a further 3,911 Covid-19 cases in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area.

Over the past seven days, there were 6,737 cases recorded in the Derry and Strabane Council area.

The infection rates within Derry and Strabane is still the highest of all councils in the North of Ireland, and has now risen to 4,453.2 cases per 100,000.

There are currently 348 patients with Covid-19 in hospital here.

There are 31 patients with Covid-19 being treated in intensive care units, with 25 people on ventilators.

There are 36 people being treated in Altnagelvin Hospital with Coronavirus with five people in intensive care.

The figures show that 15.32 per cent of beds in Altnagelvin Hospital are occupied by people with Coronavirus and it is running at 7.52 per cent over capacity for beds.

The Department of Health reports that 112 care homes in the North of Ireland are dealing with an outbreak of Coronavirus, with 1,034 closed cases of Covid-19 in care homes here.

A total of 3,530,777 vaccines for Covid-19 have now been administered across the North of Ireland.

Of that total, 1,399,866 were first doses, 1,297,302 were second doses and the remaining were third doses.

814,363 booster vaccines have been delivered.
