One further death, 2,148 new cases in North

THE Department of Health has announced a further 2,148 new cases in the North of Ireland in the last 24 hours.

That’s a rise of 350 on figures given yesterday for Saturday.

There has been one further Covid-19-related death (none outside the current reporting period) bringing the total number of deaths (mostly in hospitals) linked to Coronavirus here since the start of the pandemic is 2,952.

None of these latest deaths was recorded in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area.

In the past week, the Department has recorded 14,632 new cases of Coronavirus.

There has been a further 187 positive cases in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area.

Over the past seven days there have been a further 1,258 COVID-19 cases in the Derry and Strabane area.

This means that since the pandemic started in March 2020 there have now been 32,660 positive cases within the council boundary.

The rate of infection within the Derry and Strabane Council area has climbed steeply to 831.5 cases per 100,000 – now the second highest of all 11 councils in the North.

The Department has to date recorded a total of 189 Coronavirus deaths within the Derry and Strabane council area to date – the lowest out of all councils here.

Bed occupancy across all hospitals is now at 102 per cent.

There are currently 276 patients in hospitals across the North with Coronavirus.

There are 34 patients being treated in intensive care with 23 patients on ventilators.

The Western Trust reports that 8.22 per cent of beds in Altnagelvin Hospital are COVID-19 occupied with staff treating 26 patients with Coronavirus.

Six of these patients are currently being treated in Altnagelvin’s ICU for COVID-19.

The hospital is currently running at 2.83 per cent over capacity for beds.

A total of 41 care homes are now dealing with a Coronavirus outbreak with a further 1,024 concluded Coronavirus outbreaks in care homes.

To date, a total of 3,364,925 Coronavirus vaccines have been administered in the North which included first and second dose vaccinations and the booster jab.
