Twelve more deaths, 1,481 new cases in North

THE Department of Health has reported a further 1,481 new cases in the North of Ireland in the past 24 hours.

That’s a rise of 486 on figures given yesterday for Tuesday.

There have been 12 further Covid-19-related deaths (none outside the current reporting period), with the total to date since the start of the pandemic (mostly in hospitals) now at 2,737.

None of these latest deaths were recorded in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area.

In the past week, the Department has recorded 8,020 new cases of Coronavirus.

There has been a further 97 positive cases in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area, a rise of 31 on numbers given yesterday for Tuesday.

Over the past seven days there have been a further 491 COVID-19 cases in the Derry and Strabane area.

This means that since the pandemic started in March there have now been 27,620 positive cases within the council boundary.

The rate of infection within the Derry and Strabane Council area has risen slightly to 324.6 cases per 100,000 – still the lowest rate of all 11 councils in the North.

The Department has recorded a total of 178 Coronavirus deaths within the Derry and Strabane council area to date – the lowest out of all councils here.

Bed occupancy across all hospitals is now at 108 per cent.

There are currently 378 patients in hospitals across the North with Coronavirus.

There are 41 patients being treated in intensive care with 31 patients on ventilators.

The Western Trust reports that 8.82 per cent of beds in Altnagelvin Hospital are COVID-19 occupied with staff treating 35 patients with Coronavirus.

Six of these patients are currently being treated in Altnagelvin’s ICU for COVID-19.

The hospital is currently running at 7.71 per cent over capacity with beds.

A total of 42 care homes are now dealing with a Coronavirus outbreak with a further 939 concluded Coronavirus outbreaks in care homes.

A total of ten out of 68 residential care homes in the Western Trust area are still dealing with a Coronavirus outbreak.

To date, a total of 2,694,799 Coronavirus vaccines have been administered in the North.
