THE funeral will take place on Monday, October 4, for SDLP stalwart Jimmy Clifford who passed away on Friday.

A Family Notice reads: “James (Jimmy) CLIFFORD, 1st October 2021, beloved husband of the late Patsy, loving father of Martina, Annmarie, Patricia and Roisin, dear father-in-law of Gerry and Rory and much loved grandfather of Conor, Martin, Emma, Colleen and Adrian.

“House private please due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

“Funeral from his home, 92 Iniscarn Road on Monday at 9.30 am for 10 ‘clock Requiem Mass in St Mary’s Church, Creggan.

“Interment afterwards in the City cemetery.

“The mass can be viewed live via the church webcam.

“Sacred Heart of Jesus have mercy on his soul. St Therese intercede for him.”

Following his sad passing, SDLP leader Colum Eastwood paid tribute to Mr Clifford who was a former party councillor.

Said the Foyle MP: “Jimmy Clifford was a grafter.

“He worked hard everyday for the people of Creggan and Derry, making big sacrifices and always putting the interests of the people he represented before his own.

“He was part of a generation of community leaders who saw injustice and refused to look the other way.

l”He stood with John Hume in some of the most difficult days of our peace process, even when doing so meant he became a target for intimidation, threats and violence.

“There’s nothing that would have stopped him.

“My thoughts and prayers, and those of SDLP members in Derry, are with Jimmy’s family and wide circle of friends at this difficult time.

“I hope they find comfort in the immense good that he did throughout his life and the many people he helped.”
