SDLP Foyle MLA Sinead McLaughlin

THE SDLP’s Sinéad McLaughlin has welcomed Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon’s review of planning policy, including on fracking, to protect the environment.

Said the Foyle MLA: “In government the SDLP is once again taking vital steps to protect our environment.

“Our Minister Nichola Mallon’s announcement of a review of planning policy that deals with exploration including fracking comes in the wake of the UN Report on the climate crisis.

“Our Minister is committed to ensuring the planning system is robust and protects the environment from harmful exploration.

“This builds on work undertaken by former SDLP Minister and my Foyle party colleague Mark H Durkan who introduced a moratorium on fracking while in government. We are committed to doing all we can to fight the climate crisis, protect our natural environment and prevent biodiversity loss.

“With the SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood MP’s Climate Emergency and Green Jobs Bill as well as the SDLP’s Assembly bill designed to prevent biodiversity loss, the SDLP is leading from the front in the fight against the climate crisis in government, in Westminster and in the Assembly.”
