THE SDLP’s Mark H Durkan has welcomed a decision taken by Derry and Strabane District Council this week to extend a Tree Protection Order on trees at Beechwood Park in the Strathfoyle area of the city.

The fight to protect several trees in the estate has been ongoing over the past year.

Said the Foyle MLA: “I welcome the decision by Council to extend the Tree Protection Order on trees at Beechwood Park.

“In February, several trees on this site were cut down without consulting or considering residents.

“Well done to my SDLP colleagues Angela Dobbins, John Boyle and Sean Mooney who spoke up on this issue and to members from other parties and local groups who did the right thing.

“This is a positive result for nature and for Strathfoyle and I commend all involved who helped to achieve this outcome.”
