THE North West Cricket Union has announced that it is to receive funding of £35,000 from Derry and Strabane District Council to help support three International T20 games between Ireland and Zimbabwe at Bready later this summer.
The high profile games were officially announced by Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Alderman Graham Warke, during the weekend’s Interprovincial game at the venue between North West Warriors and the Northern Knights.
The three-match Twenty20 series will form part of the inaugural 2020-2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Super League and will be played on August 15th, 17th and 20th.
The games represent a massive coup for the local Union and will attract millions of online viewers and global media attention.
Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Alderman Graham Warke, said the fixtures were a unique opportunity to showcase the North West to the sporting world.
“World Cup Super League cricket coming to Bready is brilliant news,” he said.
“This is one of the biggest sports fixtures to ever take place in our Council area, the games are an opportunity to showcase our region as a host for world class sports events.
“I am delighted that Council have been able to support this high level fixture through the National Event Fund and I would like to congratulate Bready Cricket Club and the North West Cricket Union for their tireless work to secure the games.
“We look forward to working with Cricket Ireland to host the players and supporters of Zimbabwe and cricket fans from all over Ireland – we can promise you an unforgettable experience in our City and District.”
North West Cricket Union General Manager, Peter McCartney, is delighted to securing the fixtures:
“It’s fantastic news not just for cricket here but the region as a whole,” he said. “The Council’s financial commitment to this major sporting event represents a significant landmark in relations between our Union and DCSDC.
“We are grateful for how they have committed to ensuring not only the series helps promote the region on the world stage to an audience of millions but also grassroots legacy programmes.
“The partnership between Bready, Cricket Ireland and the NWCU has really grown in recent years and we are delighted to be now working alongside the Council to produce a world-class sporting event for the area.”
The attendance at the game will be dependent on the restrictions to limit the spread of the Covid 19 set by the Northern Ireland Executive and full ticket details will be announced later in the summer.
