Derry defendants told to appear at only Letterkenny court

A JUDGE has asked Gardai to make it clear to Derry defendants that sittings of the Inishowen courts are currently being held at Letterkenny Courthouse.

Judge Alan Mitchell was speaking at last week’s sitting of Buncrana District Court in Letterkenny after a Derry man, David Bannon of Springtown, had failed to appear on a dangerous driving charge.

He noted to Garda Sergeant Jim Collins that there was ‘some confusion’ over the exact location of the sitting of Buncrana and Carn District Courts.

“It should be made more clear that Buncrana and Carndonagh sittings are currently held at Letterkenny Courthouse due to Covid-19 restrictions,” Judge Mithchell said.

In response, Sgt Collins said it was already made clear in all correspondence that sittings were being held in Letterkenny and not in either Buncrana or Carn.

Judge Mitchell said that Inishowen sittings “should be” back in Buncrana Courthouse by next January.
