THE Royal Life Saving Society are raising awareness and equipping everybody with the skills and knowledge to make the right decisions about water safety as part of Drowning Prevention Week, which begins on Saturday, June 19.
The annual RLSS campaign involves facts, advice, and educational resources to help everyone become more aware of the potential dangers of water.
Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Alderman Graham Warke, said: “As we head into the summer months and the weather hopefully gets warmer, we know that a lot of people, including our children, will be excited about getting into the water and enjoying a refreshing swim.
“I’m sure a lot of people will be planning staycations this year and visits to the beach, and it’s incredibly important that we are all educated about the dangers that can come from swimming somewhere like the sea or open water.
“There may be some people who are not confident swimmers and the useful resources on the RLSS website can provide advice to keep you safe.
Mayor Warke added: “There is also lots of information for families and young people who may go swimming with their friends about steps that you should take and, if there is an emergency, about what the next steps are.
“There can be fatal and tragic consequences if we’re not careful, so education and awareness are key, and I would strongly encourage everyone to take part in Drowning Prevention Week.”
