Eastwood calls for urgent intervention to resolve MICA crisis

SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood has called for urgent intervention to resolve the MICA crisis across the North West.

Thousands of families have been affected by the MICA scandal which has seen houses literally crumble because of faulty building blocks.

They are furious that the Irish Government will not cover the 100 per cent cost of the repairs to their homes.

Instead, they have been told to stump up 10 per cent of the repair costs.

Said the Foyle MP: “Tens of thousands of homeowners have been watching their homes crumble around them.

“Their lives and livelihoods damaged through no fault of their own.

“Most cannot afford to start again nor should they have to.

“The heart-breaking testimonies of homeowners who worked all their lives so they could build their dream home to retire to, now left with few options.

“It is clear the current scheme of redress does not work to support all of those affected.

“The Irish Government should intervene and change the current redress scheme so that 100% of costs are provided up front for repairs and that this applies across the board to all affected homeowners.”
