SINN Féin Councillor Sandra Duffy has welcomed an announcement by the Economy Minister of a one-year pilot project with higher education institutions in the North to address period poverty.

Said Cllr Duffy: “I welcome this pilot project to provide free of charge period products during the academic year for students attending Ulster University, Queen’s University , Stranmillis University College and St Marys’ University College.

“This is another important step on the road to help eradicate period poverty.

“As we know Derry has been to the fore in the campaign on this issue. I have been overwhelmed by the support that this campaign continues to get.

“It has really struck a chord with people across our city and district and in true Derry fashion people are more than willing to help.

“It’s important that we continue on with pushing this issue locally and raise awareness of period poverty in the times ahead.
