FOUR students from Lumen Christi College have been presented with North West Regional College’s (NWRC) inaugural Challenge Cup for Engineering.

Three teams of students from the Bishop Street Grammar School made it to the final of the competition, which was held as part of National Apprenticeship Week.

All of the finalists have now been invited to NWRC’s Product Design Centre in Limavady to prototype their designs.

Aodhan Gillespie, Kiernan Nash, Marco Logue and Luca Dunlop, Year 11 students, scooped the top prize for their winning design of a portable charger using solar plus back wind-up dynamo. All four team members were also presented with their own individual prize of an Amazon 4th Generation Echo Dot.

Sean Molloy, Head of Technology and Design at Lumen Christi said: “I am really proud of all the students that have been involved in this challenge, each team put tremendous work in coming up with really fantastic innovative solutions.”

Philip Devlin, Manager of NWRC’s Product Design Centre said: “The standard of presentations witnessed from Year 11 students in Lumen Christi College leaves me in no doubt that the future of Engineering here in the North West is in safe hands.

“The three groups of finalists from the school made exceptional presentations showing real innovative design. We are looking forward to welcoming them to our Product Design Centre in Greystone to prototype these designs in the future“.

The 2021 NWRC Engineering competition challenged students to Design a Portable Mobile Charger capable of charging mobile devices in a remote location totally off grid.

Students were asked to present a design to a judging panel including detailed drawings of components, and instructions on assembly and functionality.

The competition was judged by Philip Devlin, Manager NWRC’s PDC, and John Cartin, Deputy Head of Training and Skills at NWRC.
