Eastwood: Time to end unfair fire and rehire tactics

SDLP Foyle MP Colum Eastwood

SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood has called on the British government to end worker exploitation by corporations who engage in ‘fire and rehire’ tactics.

Said the Foyle MP: “The pandemic has had a harmful impact on workers, with many losing their jobs and livelihoods as a result.

“It is a disgrace that some businesses and employers are dismissing and rehiring staff on worse pay, terms and conditions.

“Even threatening workers is exploitation and is unacceptable in 2021.

“The Trades Union Congress found that already one in ten workers had been threatened with fire and rehire during the Covid pandemic.

“At Westminster, I’ve signed an Early Day Motion and I’m calling on the British government to step in, end these fire and rehire tactics and make the practice illegal, just as it is in the Republic of Ireland.

“It’s time to put an end to these unfair fire and rehire tactics once and for all to protect workers, their rights and futures.”
