THOSE responsible for a spate of violent incidents in Top of the Hill on Sunday achieved nothing but further traumatising their own community, local Sinn Féin Councillor Christopher Jackson has said.
Calling for calm, Cllr Jackson said legitimate concern at a weekend policing operation in the area in which a man was shot, should not be used as an excuse for vandalism and destruction.
“While people are rightly concerned at the actions of the PSNI on Saturday night, there can be no excuse for what happened here the following day,” said Cllr Jackson.
“This wasn’t protest. This was vandalism and destruction and the only thing it achieved was to terrorise and further traumatise the people of this community.
“Of course, the PSNI must be held to account and my party certainly intends to do that through the accountability mechanisms such as the Policing Board and the Policing Ombudsman as well as challenging the PSNI leadership directly.
“We need to let that process take place and, in the meantime, the community in Top of the Hill is appealing for calm and an end to the violence.
“If those involved genuinely care about the people within this community then they will listen to that appeal.”
