SDLP support committee to probe British government lobbying

SDLP Foyle MP Colum Eastwood

SDLP Leader and Foyle MP Foyle Colum Eastwood, along with Claire Hanna MP, has supported a Labour Party motion to establish a committee that would investigate lobbying of the British government following the recent Greensill scandal.

Said Colum Eastwood: “The Greensill scandal is another blatant example of abuse of privilege, power and cronyism in this Tory government.

“We’ve already had a lack of transparency around the awarding of specific Covid contracts, especially when billions of pounds have been wasted around test and trace.

“This government doesn’t understand the word transparency.

“Many people will be rightly disgusted about what has happened recently involving lobbying of government and ministers with former Prime Minister David Cameron, Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak, Lex Greensill and other people involved.

“There must be a full inquiry into this scandal.

“I was happy to support the Labour Party motion last night, which would investigate the effectiveness of existing legislation to prevent the inappropriate lobbying of ministers and the British government.

“It was very telling that the DUP did not vote on the motion last night.

“This begs the question – where do the DUP stand on corruption, lack of transparency and lobbying of government and Ministers?

“Given the recent past scandals in Northern Ireland, there must be clear condemnation from all parties when public confidence is damaged.

“Any investigation into this lobbying scandal must not be another Whitehall whitewash.”
