Easter art competition for primary school children

MAYOR of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr Brian Tierney, has invited primary school children to take part in a special Easter art competition, with the winning designs to be posted on the wall of the Mayor’s Parlour.

Mayor Tierney is asking local children to design their own Easter bonnet on paper, with each entrant receiving a complimentary Easter egg.

The competition will be divided into two categories – Primary One to Primary Three (ages 5-7) and Primary Four to Primary Seven (ages 8-11), and first, second and third prizes will be awarded in each category.

Said Mayor Tierney: “Throughout this past year I have been amazed at how well our children have coped with everything that has been thrown at them.

“Their lives have been turned upside down and they have taken it all in their stride.

“I wanted to host this competition as a way of letting our children express themselves creatively – to pick up a pencil, a crayon or a paintbrush and have a little bit of fun drawing and decorating an Easter bonnet.

“Whether it’s bright and colourful, or wild and wacky, I can’t wait to see the designs coming through.

“I already know it’s going to be really tough to choose the top three in each category, but this really isn’t about a competition, it’s about giving back to our children, giving them something fun to work on and to help get them into the Easter and Spring spirit.

“I will be very proud as Mayor to have the top six designs on the wall of my Mayor’s Parlour, and I welcome entries from any primary school children across our district.”

Entries can be sent to the Mayor’s office by email – [email protected] – or by posting to Mayor’s Office, The Guildhall, Derry, BT48 6DG by Friday, March 26, 2021.

Entries should include the child’s full name, age, primary and a contact number or email.

For more information, contact the Mayor’s office by emailing [email protected] or calling 02871 376 527
