‘We need recovery strategy that maximises protocol advantages’

SDLP Foyle MLA and Economy spokesperson Sinead McLaughlin

SDLP Economy Spokesperson Sinead McLaughlin has said that the Finance and Economy Minister must urgently design and implement a recovery and investment strategy to support jobs and businesses during the turbulent months ahead.

The SDLP has also proposed the establishment of an economic taskforce at the Executive this week.

Said the Foyle MLA: “Businesses here are being buffeted in every direction by the impact of Brexit and the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We know that when government support reduces toward the end of the crisis, many businesses may struggle to reopen and jobs will be put at risk.

“That means that the Executive needs to get its recovery strategy in place now.

“Implementing a new recovery and investment strategy is one part of the SDLP’s twin track approach to managing the turbulence of the months ahead.

“Our Minister Nichola Mallon will propose the creation of an Economic Taskforce at the Executive this week to make the most of the competitive advantage that we can harness through the Northern Ireland Protocol.

“Other parties need to take the blinkers off.

“It appears to many that they would prefer we all suffer so that they can make a political point rather than work constructively together to maximise the benefits of dual market access.

“There are undoubtedly challenges with the protocol’s implementation but we would all be better served working in common cause than fighting each other.

“The SDLP is bringing solutions to the challenges we face. It’s time all parties put their shoulders to the wheel.”
