SDLP leader and Foyle MP Colum Eastwood

LOCAL politicians have condemned a double shooting in Derry on Saturday evening.

The paramilitary-style attacks happened in Creggn’s Rinmore Drive shortly after 6.35 pm.

One of the victims is in his 30s, the other man is in his 40s.

They were both taken to hospital for treatment.

SDLP leader tweeted: “Utterly depressing that we’ve had a double shooting in Derry on Saturday night.

“Our hospital has enough to deal with at this time.

“We don’t want the law of the jungle in our city.

“Get off our backs.

Sinn Féin MLA Karen Mullan said: “The shooting of two people in Creggan tonight is wrong and I condemn it.

“There is no place for guns or this type of activity on our streets.

“This is the fourth shooting since Christmas. We are in the middle of a pandemic, our health service is already stretched to the limit. This is the last thing people of this city want to see.

“Anyone with information on what happened should bring it forward to the PSNI.”

Chief Supt Darrien Jones described the double shooting as a “reckless and brutal” attack.

He said the shootings had caused “great distress” to the local community and “created further stress to our local health services who are dealing with the current health pandemic”.
