MEMBERS of Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Planning Committee have approved two new housing developments for the Waterside and Eglinton areas at the monthly meeting which reconvened online this afternoon.
The additional new homes will help to alleviate pressures on housing demand locally and were welcomed by members who praised the continued progress of local development despite the additional challenges presented by the Covid19 crisis.
The committee approved plans for the demotion of three vacant buildings in Duke Street to make way for the construction of a number of new apartments.
The residences will have access on to both Duke Street and Spencer Road, and the development will also feature a formal garden and soft play area for residents.
A total of 74 housing units consisting of both two and one bedroom apartments will be available once complete.
A reserved matters application for the development of nine new social housing units, on lands at Ballygudden Road beside Ballycanice Close in Eglinton, was also passed by the committee.
The new homes will comprise of five three-bedroomed homes, three two-bedroomed dwellings and five three-bedroomed homes for those with complex needs.
Speaking after the meeting, Chair of the Planning Committee, Councillor Christopher Jackson, welcomed the additional accommodation the new developments will create.
“We are all too aware of the demand for local housing, particularly social housing, to meet a variety of needs.
“I am pleased today to see developers continuing to invest in the creation of good quality homes and facilities in both rural and urban areas.
“Council is keen to work with both investors and developers to establish better standards of accommodation for a range of uses to meet the needs of a thriving modern city, and to improve the offering of housing in our rural areas.
“But we must do this responsibly and in keeping with the wider vision for the development of Derry and Strabane as set out in our Local Development Plan.”
The monthly meeting took place online on Wednesday, but was reconvened today in line with Council’s standing orders.
