Anderson: Economy Minister needs to support cinemas

SINN Féin’s Martina Anderson has said cinemas and other events venues impacted by the pandemic should be able to access the Large Tourism and Hospitality Business Support Scheme.

Said the Foyle MLA: “The Large Tourism and Hospitality Business Support Scheme was a welcome recognition of the impact the pandemic has had on some larger businesses excluded from previous grant supports.

“However, this support scheme does not extend to cinemas and other events venues that have also been badly impacted.

“The DUP Economy Minister needs to look again at this.

“Cinemas and other venues have been closed for prolonged periods. Many have invested in measures to protect customers and workers, they need support to protect their viability.

“There is a pattern of excluding many businesses which are in difficulty from the economy department’s support schemes.

“This needs to be addressed to protect jobs and livelihoods, there is money available should the budget for this scheme need to be increased so there is no excuse for support not to get out to those who need it.”
