Mayor Tierney said that while it is important for people to enjoy exercise within the NI Executive restrictions, it is also crucial that crowds are avoided.
“We have seen an increase in the number of people using the walkway along the Quay in the last few weeks and whilst this is very positive, we have also received some reports of concerns that at times this has led to some degree of congestion which is worrying.
“The current Covid-19 infection rates remain high and our health service is under pressure, so I would urge people to consider making use of the many other parks and open spaces that we have across our city and district when getting out for some daily exercise.
“I deeply appreciate how important exercise is, particularly at the current time, for both physical and mental health, but I would remind everyone to please stay two metres apart from anyone not in your household.”
Mayor Tierney said Council had also received increased complaints regarding dog fouling and will be closely monitoring it.
He asked all owners to be responsible and respectful to others.
“There’s no excuse for dog fouling. We are all well aware of the consequences of owners not cleaning up after their dogs, which can lead to disease.
“We are simply asking owners to be responsible for their own dogs, be prepared and use the many bins which are available.
“We will be stepping up patrols to combat this issue, and all dog owners should be aware that allowing a dog to foul without clearing it up is littering, which can result in an £80 on the spot fine.”
