Durkan welcomes traffic calming measures for Nixon’s Corner

SDLP Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan

THE SDLP’s Mark H Durkan has welcomed confirmation from the Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon that speed cushions on the Braehead Road approaching Nixon’s corner will be implemented in the New Year.

Said the Foyle MLA: “I am pleased that traffic calming measures for the Braehead Road near Nixon’s Corner, have finally been confirmed and are expected to be carried out in the New Year.

“The installation of traffic cushions in this residential area have been a long time coming but I appreciate that progress was hindered by the pandemic and difficulties securing resources.

“Residents have been crying out for these measures due to concerns about the volume and speed of traffic travelling along this road on a daily basis.

“The rural road, near the Donegal border, is a notoriously dangerous spot and I have long campaigned for much needed traffic calming in this area.

“I appreciate that measures were implemented in recent years, however with new housing developments and an increase in the number of younger families living in the area, it soon became clear that existing measures were not sufficient.

“I subsequently appealed for the introduction of additional infrastructure to improve the overall safety along this stretch of road and welcome that these works have now been confirmed.

“I hope this news will provide peace of mind for locals and will no doubt go a long way in improving the overall road safety in this area.”
