DERRY City and Strabane District Council will be urged to condemn the British Government’s latest refusal to order a full inquiry into the murder of human-rights lawyer Pat Finucane, Sinn Féin Councillor Sandra Duffy has said.
The SInn Féin Council Group leader was commenting ahead of Thursday’s full council meeting when she will table a motion calling for the British Government to honour its commitment to establish a full public inquiry into the 1989 uff assassination.
Cllr Duffy said: “There is no dispute that state actors colluded with the UDA to kill Pat Finucane.
“Despite this – 31 years later – the Finucane family are still being denied access to truth and justice by the British Government.
“They have had to fight for every scrap of information that has been dragged into the public domain, and still today do not know everyone who was involved in conceiving, directing and controlling Pat’s assassination.
“Their grief has been compounded yet again by the recent decision from British Secretary of State Brandon Lewis not to order a full Public Inquiry – a move solely designed to ensure that the full story of state collusion is never exposed.
“I will be asking my fellow councillors to support this motion in order to send a message to the Finucane family and to the British government.
“To the Finucane family we say that we support your demand for truth and justice which will only be achieved through a full public inquiry.
“To the British government we say it’s time to stop the cover up and order a full public inquiry now into the state’s collusion in the assassination of Pat Finucane.”
