SDLP MPs oppose law breaking bill

SDLP Foyle MP Colum Eastwood

SDLP MPs Colum Eastwood and Claire Hanna opposed the British Government’s attempt to sanction breaches of international law last night during the passage of the Internal Market Bill.

The MPs, representing a cross-community majority opposed to a hard Brexit in the North of Ireland, said that the British Government has treated people here with contempt.

Said the Foyle MP: “The clear message from the British Government to people and businesses in Northern Ireland is that they view our interests as totally expendable.

“There is no promise too big or too small for Boris Johnson and his government to break in their fevered pursuit of a hard Brexit.

“The insertion of the international law breaching clauses in the Internal Market Bill is just the latest example.

“SDLP MPs made it clear last night – Northern Ireland will not be a pawn in their reckless game.

“It’s beyond time that the government realised it has its back against the wall.

“There is no chicanery or last minute parliamentary stunts that can prevent severe economic hardship if a deal is not reached.

“It’s time to get a grip and make the deal.

“The SDLP will continue to resist at every opportunity the imposition of Boris’s Brexit on our people.”
