Durkan: Executive should commit to ending homelessness

SDLP Social Justice Spokesperson Mark H Durkan has said that on Homelessness Awareness Day in 2020, the Executive should commit to ending homelessness and provide increased support for the most vulnerable in our society.

Said the Foyle MLA: “Today is Homelessness Awareness Day and it is important that we use this as an opportunity to recommit ourselves to action, to tackle our housing crisis.”

“Access to a good quality, secure and affordable home is a fundamental right.

“It is critical if communities are to flourish.

“Nobody should have to sleep on the street or call a hostel room their home. In the 21st century, we cannot accept this as normal.”

“Urgent action must be taken before more and more individuals end up on the streets; that is why the SDLP has consistently called for the creation of a comprehensive 20-year Housing Strategy to address issues including supply, affordability, regulation of the Private Rented Sector and homelessness.”

“I welcome the recent statement from the Communities Minister, who shares my view that this situation is unacceptable.

“This must be followed by action. On Homelessness Awareness Day, let’s recommit ourselves to ending homelessness, once and for all.”
