SDLP Foyle MLA Sinead McLaughlin

SDLP Economy Spokesperson Sinead McLaughlin has given a cautious welcome to the newly announced £10m support scheme for self-employed people across the North, but has said it is essential this scheme does not experience lengthy delays.

Said tThe Foyle MLA: “It is unacceptable that so many self-employed people across the North have been unable to access existing financial support schemes.

“Many people have not received a single penny in support since March and it is not good enough.

“While it is welcome that a £10m support package has been announced for self-employed people, it is essential that this funding is delivered urgently.

“The delays in other financial support schemes have been outrageous and left people across the North struggling and deeply frustrated.

“This new scheme is welcome and will provide hope and comfort to self-employed people in the mouth of Christmas, but it is essential that is delivered at pace.

“The SDLP will be seeking clarity on this scheme to provide answers for people.”
