SINN Féin Councillor Sandra Duffy has welcomed Derry City and Strabane District Council backing her proposal to instigate a ‘Shop Derry and Strabane’ campaign for Christmas.

Councillor Duffy said: “I am pleased to have received full backing of the Council to support my motion calling for a “Shop Derry and Strabane” campaign for this Christmas.

“It’s vital that we should do all we can to assist our local traders and shops throughout this very difficult period and should explore opportunities to promote local businesses through advertising, online presence and social media.

“This should include our shops and our small cottage industries with traders working from their homes.

“We need to commit to supporting our local traders to get them and their families through Christmas so they can continue to trade in the New Year.”

She said backing local businesses would help keep money circulating in the Derry and Strabane areas.

“These have been tough economic times and we need to do all we can to help our traders and businesses.

“They generate wealth, employment and opportunity and are the glue which binds communities together.”
