SDLP leader Colum Eastwood

SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood has welcomed comments from An Taoiseach, Micheál Martin TD on his vision for a Shared Island, investment in communities and all island infrastructure.

The Foyle MP said that the commitments outlined today have the potential to transform communities and reflect the detailed conversations he has had with the Taoiseach about cross border investment.

Colum Eastwood MP said: “I warmly welcome the address today from An Taoiseach, where he outlined his vision of a shared island.

“The initiatives that the Irish Government has prioritised speak to the needs of people across this island – transport, connectivity and attracting new investment. This is an opportunity to transform communities and lives across the island.

“Our view has long been that those of us who want to see constitutional change have a responsibility to engage in a positive and respectful conversation with all of our neighbours with a view to building a new Ireland.

“But we also have to demonstrate the benefits of cooperation and the potential we have to fundamentally reshape the lives of those we represent for the better.

“An Taoiseach’s remarks today were a clear signal of his intent to invest in transformative projects such as Magee expansion, the A5, Ulster Canal, high speed rail and Narrow Water Bridge, to fundamentally reshape the lives of people across our island.

“These comments are on the back of a significant funding allocation, €500 million, for all island projects in the Irish Government’s recent budget and reflect the detailed conversations that I have been having with the Taoiseach about priority North-South investment.

“We have an unmissable opportunity to improve lives and deliver better for future generations.”
