Junior Minister Declan Kearney

JUNIOR Minister Declan Kearney has told a Stormont press conference that there is “already evidence that restrictions are working in Derry and Strabane.”

Numbers of people testing positive have been falling since the council went into a new lockown on October 5.

“We are now six days into an emergency four week intervention.

“The restrictions, that we have introduced, are to protect people from the very real dangers of Covid-19.

“To alleviate pressures on the health and social care system and crucially to save lives.”

He says the R rate (rate of infection) is now below 1 and he thanked the people in the north west for their cooperation and said this progress would not have been made “without their effort.”

Mr Kearney says people must continue to do the basics, such as wash your hands, keep your distance and download the StopCovidNI app.

The junior minister says it is essential “we create a permanent culture of compliance and partnership within our community”.

“The success of our collective efforts in the next three to four weeks in suppressing the virus will depend on a real authentic whole of government and whole of public approach.”
