Coronavirus: Middleton urges Royal Mail to consider a Waterside facility

FOYLE DUP MLA Gary Middleton has urged Royal Mail to consider an additional depot in Derry.

Mr Middleton said: “COVID-19 has had a significant impact on staff at Royal Mail. My thoughts are with all of those affected.

“Staff must be reassured that all of the necessary steps are being taken to keep them safe.

“The current situation does, however, highlight ongoing concerns about the number of workers inside the Great James Street building with little space to operate properly.

“This is due to the increase in the number of parcels coming through the Great James street office and the number of new housing developments across the city.

“This is particularly concerning in a COVID-19 environment.

“I have written to Royal Mail management urging them to consider a Waterside building.

“It is my understanding that parcels and letters are already separated at the mail processing centre in Belfast.

“An additional premises would address many of the existing operating pressures in the long term and would also ease traffic pressures at Great James Street for those collecting parcels.”
