WORK started this week in Artigarvan on upgrades to the village’s play park, which will include the addition of a new groundflush roundabout, zipline and basket swing.
It is one of four village renewal projects to take place, alongside Ardstraw, Drumahoe and Donemana.
The play park will remain closed to the public due to the upgrade work, which is scheduled to be complete in two months.
The combined cost of the four projects is £200,000 and it is being delivered by Derry City and Strabane District Council with support from funding allocated by Derry and Strabane Rural Partnership under Priority 6 (LEADER) of the Northern Ireland Rural Development Programme 2014-2020.
As with each of the other projects, the upgrades in Artigarvan will provide improved recreation and leisure facilities which will promote social, physical and environmental wellbeing for all and, in particular, the children and young people of the Artigarvan community.
The project is in line with Council’s Green Infrastructure Plan, which focuses on utilising natural spaces to provide environmental, economic and social benefits for communities.
Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr Brian Tierney, visited the site as work got underway.
“After seeing the great work that has been done in Ardstraw as the first of these four village renewal projects, I am delighted to be here as work gets underway in Artigarvan on upgrades to the play facility that will benefit the whole community.
“The plans look really good and it again highlights the commitment that we have as a council to play provision and to green infrastructure across our villages and communities.
“I’m looking forward to seeing the final product, which I’m sure will be enjoyed by all in Artigarvan.”
Mary Hunter, Chair of Derry and Strabane Rural Partnership (LAG), said: “The benefits of play are so important and the LAG are delighted to be able to contribute towards the upgrade and improvement of this vital facility in Artigarvan.
“We hope that the Artigarvan community will take great pleasure from this play facility, especially the children.”
Artigarvan community representative John McCarter, Chairperson of Leckpatrick Development Association, said it was great to see work get underway.
“This project has been the cause of real excitement in Artigarvan and we’re delighted that in a few months’ time the work will be completed, and we will have a hugely upgraded play facility that will bring joy to the children of our community, as well as providing a meeting place for the parents.”
