DERRY’S Tower Museum has been successful in its application to take part an innovative Digital Skills Development Programme for Small & Medium Heritage Organisations across the UK.

The Digital Heritage Lab, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) , is part of the Digital Skills for Heritage initiative, offering a free programme for small and medium heritage organisations seeking to develop their digital capabilities and capacity.

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council Cllr Brian Tierney congratulated staff at the Tower Museum for securing their place on this innovative project.

He said the Digital Heritage Lab programme was providing additional support during difficult times as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic and that this digital support would greatly benefit the Tower Museum in developing their digital presence and capacity.

Roisin Doherty, Curator with the Museum & Visitor Service at Derry City & Strabane District Council said the Tower Museum was really looking forward to working with the Digital Heritage Lab and availing of their specialist digital training and support.

She explained that the programme consists of four strands: The Lab, Online Workshops, Training Events and Digital Bootcamps.

As part of the programme, the Tower Museum staff will work with a digital skills expert and will have access to a range of online workshops and online peer network meetings to assist them reach their digital potential.

Roisin said: “This is fantastic news for our staff and for the wider public who in turn, will see the benefits of these new skills as we learn to enhance and promote our historic and cultural offering.”

The Lab is a strand of the Digital Heritage Lab and is providing digital mentoring support to 60 UK-based small to medium sized heritage organisations.

The aim of The Lab is to help these 60 heritage organisations develop their individual digital capabilities and capacity, and is tailored to each organisation’s needs.

Digital Heritage Lab is a project managed by the Arts Marketing Association (AMA) — in partnership with Arts Fundraising & Philanthropy, One Further and the Collections Trust and funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund as part of the Digital Skills for Heritage initiative.
