DERRY City and Strabane District Council has announced the winner of its recent competition to come up with a catchy name for a new Chatbot service to help with its recycling campaign.

Local man Paul Hughes’ entry ‘RIA’ – short for Recycling Information Assistant – has scooped him a new Amazon Fire tablet, and the bot will now get to work in the coming weeks assisting the public with helpful information on recycling locally.

RIA will sit within the Recycling section on the Council website and help visitors with their queries, as part of a special environmental project linking Derry and Strabane with other environmentally conscious areas across the world.

The EMERGREEN project explores ways to enhance approaches to environmental issues and the challenges presented by factors such as long distances, high service delivery costs, shortages in human and material resources, and lack of access to the latest innovations.

Council is working in partnership with four other NPA regions to address concerns around climate change by harnessing emerging technologies to promote the vitally important reduce, reuse, recycle message.

Mayor of Derry and Strabane, Councillor Brian Tierney, congratulated Paul on his winning moniker and encouraged local people to use the new Chatbot service if they need advice or information.

“Well done to our winner Paul for doing his bit for the local environment and coming up with the new name for the Chatbot service, which is an important addition to our information resources on the Council website.

RIA will be on hand soon to help answer all your questions about recycling.

“The EMERGREEN Project relates directly to Council’s Zero Waste Circular Economy Strategy and we are committed to creating greener communities through developing advanced new ways to help public services tackle environmental issues.

“We will continue to explore how technology and the latest innovations can help proactively address the many climate challenges affecting our local environment.”
