SDLP Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan

THE SDLP’s Mark H Durkan has welcomed an announcement from the Department of Health that a deal has been agreed with Vertex Pharmaceuticals to secure access to drug Kafrtio, to eligible patients with Cystic Fibrosis in the North of n Ireland as early as next month.

Said the Foyle MLA: “I am delighted that those living with Cystic Fibrosis in the North will now be afforded access to this life-changing drug, bringing us in line with the rest of the UK.

“Over two years ago, I walked alongside people living with Cystic Fibrosis and their families to Stormont demanding action to secure access to life-changing treatments.

“It has been an uphill battle to reach this point yet campaigners have fought fervently and undeterred despite so many setbacks.

“I commend all those involved for their perseverance and continued hope throughout this four-year long campaign.

“Last year their hard fought efforts also secured cystic fibrosis drugs Orkambi, Symkevi and Kalydeco, making these previously deemed ‘unaffordable’ treatments a reality.

“Securing this additional drug Kafrtio will transform lives here, particularly many young people living with the disease.”
