MOT centre at Newbuildings to start tests on September 1

THE SDLP’s Mark H Durkan has welcomed confirmation from Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon that the Driver & Vehicle Agency (DVA) intends to resume further MOT testing services and practical car and lorry driving tests from Tuesday, September 1.

Said the Foyle MLA: “Following queries from a number of constituents, I am pleased that Minister Mallon has announced indicative dates for the resumption of MOT test and car and lorry driving tests.

“This will be welcome news particularly for many learner drivers eager to get on the road.

“I appreciate that the uncertainty has been frustrating for learners, mainly those who had their tests cancelled due to lockdown.

“These customers will be prioritised after keyworkers and DVA will contact them to arrange an appointment.

“Details for bookings for all other customers will be issued in due course.

“Understandably, it is anticipated that there will be a considerable demand for driving tests.

“However it is hoped that the prioritising of customers in conjunction the recently announced eight-month extension for valid theory certificates, will mitigate this impact.

“Additionally, the DVA are developing an information pack that will allow instructors and candidates to prepare for the new testing process.

“This in line with other pragmatic measures implemented by the Department will ensure minimal disruption for customers as we emerge from this crisis.

“It is hoped, that with the easement of further restrictions, more services will be reinstated with an aim for full resumption in a way that will ensure the safety of both staff and customers,” added Mr Durkan.
