Mooney welcomes review of road closure law

Cllr Martin Reilly (SDLP Group Leader on DCSDC), SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood MP, Cllr Sean Mooney, Sinead McLauglin MLA

SDLP Councillor Sean Mooney has welcomed confirmation from Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon that she is to undertake a review of special events legislation that has raised issues for some local sporting organisations and charities securing road closures for community events.

Said the Derry and Strabane Councillor: “The review of special events legislation really shows that Minister Mallon is listening to the concerns that local sporting organisations and charities have raised about the difficulties they’ve had in securing road closures for community events.

“The legislation which predates Minister Mallon’s time in office has been implemented inconsistently from council to council and has caused concerns to local groups organising active, fun and often charitable events.

“The SDLP is listening to what local people are saying and we’re determined to do what we can to make it easier for everyone to lead an active lifestyle.

“That means facilitating local running clubs and helping local charities organise road-based activities.”
