Durkan welcomes ‘long overdue’ Chapel Lane street lighting repairs

SDLP Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan

THE SDLP’s Mark H Durkan has welcomed the maintenance of vandalised street lighting in the Chapel Lane area of Creggan, following safety concerns previously raised with DfI.

Said the Foyle MLA: “I am pleased that vandalised lampposts on the Chapel Lane by Bishop’s Field have finally been repaired.

“Firstly, the vandalism of these lampposts which occurred last year, including a number outside Creggan shops, must not and cannot be tolerated.

“The stumps left behind had exposed wires posing potential safety risks to residents, particularly children who frequent both areas.

“This inconsiderate stupidity only serves to disadvantage those within the community.

“I initially raised this repair with the department last June, at which point I was advised that due to budgetary constraints maintenance could not be carried out.

“I am grateful, that having consistently raised the need for repairs that the Department have finally replaced the column on Chapel Lane.

“These are essential streetlights in a heavily utilised area of Creggan and their replacement while a comparatively small issue will make a significant difference to residents who use this popular walkway.”
