Fresh cash boost for Derry and Strabane Council

TWO Stormont departments have announced funding of £11 million to support villages, towns and city centres recover from the pandemic.

The £10m Department for Communities (DfC) Capital Covid-19 Recovery Revitalisation Scheme will be used to boost more urban areas.

A further £1m is coming from the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) and will support smaller towns and villages.

Derry City and Strabane District Council will benefit from the new cash but no details have been provided as to how much it will receive in the months ahead.

Communities minister Carál Ní Chuilín said the funding will “help provide a safer experience for anyone visiting, shopping or working in our town and city centres”.

Agriculture Minister Edwin Poots says the funding aims to “restore visitor and worker confidence in our town centres and villages as being safe places to work, visit and shop”.

An initial £6m has been released to the 11 councils, with the further £5m to be issued later this year.

Under the first tranche of cash, Derry and Strabane Council will receive £455,000 from the Department for Communities with a further £74,000 from DAERA.
