McLaughlin: Minister must deliver on a regionally balanced economy

SDLP Foyle MLA and Economy spokesperson Sinead McLaughlin

SDLP Economy Spokesperson Sinead McLaughlin has welcomed a commitment by Economy Minister, Diane Dodds MLA, to deliver a regionally balanced economy, but warned it is time for action, not words.

Said the Foyle MLA: “I very much welcome the Economy Minister’s commitment to a regionally balanced economy, which she confirmed in a written response to an Assembly question I had asked.

“I hope this commitment will be included as a core part of the remit of her new Economic Advisory Group. Better delivery is essential.

“Derry has been waiting too long – the city must be treated fairly.”

“Derry and the rest of the North West have the highest levels of deprivation in Northern Ireland.

“Much more must be done to drive investment and jobs to the city and region.

“This requires more support for skills development in the city, but it also needs Invest NI to be told explicitly to drive more inward investment into Derry and Strabane.

“Clear targets for this must be given to Invest NI and it should be held to account for this performance,” she added.
