Concerns over future of Derry Community Crisis Intervention Centre – Duffy

SINN Fein Councillor Sandra Duffy has raised concerns about the future of Derry’s Community Crisis Intervention Centre.

Speaking today Cllr Duffy said: “Yesterday I stepped down as chairperson of the Policing and Community Safety Partnership after a year in the role.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Community Safety Wardens for their work over these past few weeks of lockdown, particularly as they faced very difficult situations.

“Some of these included dealing with very distressed individuals along our city’s riverfront.

“As we are now coming out of COVID19 restrictions we are facing into a mental health crisis and I am worried that the lack of funding for the Crisis Intervention Centre will result in it closing at the end of June, just at a time when it is needed most.

“I proposed at the meeting that letters highlighting the plight of the service be sent to the chair of the Health Committee and the chair of the All-party working group on mental health.

“I hope that these letters will reinforce the letters that our Council has already sent to the Health Minister and allow the Health Committee to consider the service in line with the Protect Life 2 strategy and secure the funding for this much needed service.”
