A regeneration project designed to improve pedestrian access to and from Bishop Street Car Park and enhance its physical appearance will commence on Monday, June 22.

The works will focus on two zones within the car park at the Stable Lane/Bishop Street section and the Palace Street section, and will involve the removal of sections of existing boundary walls and its replacement with new boundary treatment comprising of low brick walls and railings.

The planned work, which is funded by the Department for Communities, will create new dedicated pedestrian-friendly access points and connections onto Bishop Street, Palace Street and Stable Lane, helping to improve pedestrian permeability, safety and physical connections in this part of the city centre.

The project will also enhance the visual appearance of the area and contribute towards the wider regeneration of the city centre.

A Council spokesperson explained: “This project will compliment and align with emerging proposals to create further improved pedestrian/cycle access opportunities as part of the wider efforts to assist with the safe re-opening of the City Centre following the recent restrictions.”

The work will be completed over a 24-week period in two phases, with Phase I works taking place at the Stable Lane/Bishop Street section, followed by Phase II which will take place around the vicinity of St Augustine’s Church Hall (near to Palace Street / Society Street).

The Council spokesperson added: “We appreciate the cooperation of the public during this period and want to assure them that the work will have minimal impact on the availability of parking spaces and that alternative parking will be available at other car parks in and around the city centre.”

As part of the plans an additional CCTV camera will be erected within the Bishop Street car park providing extra security in the area.
