Public urged to get ‘on your bike’ as Council celebrates Bike Week 2020

DERRY City and Strabane District Council are encouraging the public to get ‘on your bike’ as they mark Cycling UK’s Bike Week, which runs from now until next Sunday, June 14.

It follows the announcement of work by the Department for Infrastructure to temporarily widen the cycle path along Queen’s Quay, as well the conversion of a traffic lane along Foyle Embankment into a two-way pop-up cycle lane.

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Brian Tierney, said the initiative was a great opportunity for people to get out, exercise and enjoy themselves.

“We have seen a huge upturn in the number of cyclists out and about in our city and district in the last few months, and Bike Week is an opportunity to keep that number and that community growing.

“There are so many benefits to cycling in terms of both physical and mental health, not to mention the hugely positive effect that it has on our environment.

“This week coincides perfectly with the fantastic work by the Department for Infrastructure along the Quay, and I’m sure many cyclists will avail of that in the weeks and months ahead.

“Whether you’re a novice or an experienced rider, make sure you get on your bike this week!”
Emma Hagger, Council’s Active Travel Officer, agreed that Bike Week can be enjoyed by all ages and abilities.

“This is a really exciting time in the annual calendar, and particularly this year we would love to see as many people getting involved as possible.

“There is a real appetite for cycling out there, and this is a chance for those budding cyclists to learn more about the activity and, quite simply, to get out on their bikes!

“There is also added extras, like the #7DaysOfCycling challenge, where participants are asked to do some form of cycling every day of the coming week.

“I will be answering any questions people may have around cycling, including a special Q&A Instagram hour from 10-11am on Wednesday, and we are also running a competition to win a £10 high street voucher.

“All you have to do is take a photo of something bike-related, be it cycling or washing your bike, and we will pick three winners.

“I’m really excited about the week ahead and I hope to see lots of bikes out in our city and district!”
