Coronavirus: ‘An awful lot of questions remain for our school’, says Derry principal

A DERRY principal has expressed concerns about some practical issues that will need to be resolved before any phased return of pupils is feasible.

On Thursday, Education Minister Peter Weir said some pupils could return to school in stages.

Michael Allen, who is the principal of Lisneal College, has asked how pupils can keep socially distant from each other when many use public transport to get to and from school.

“We have some double-decker buses that come to school and would regularly hold 60 pupils in them,” Mr Allen tells BBC Radio Foyle.

“In order for social distance to be effective you would only be able to hold eight pupils per floor,” he adds.

“If we have reduced numbers throughout the day, what will the public transport system look like?”

Mr Allen also tells the programme he has concerns over some pupils’ accessibility to work from home. He knows of some families with three or four pupils who share one laptop between them.

“We will need to source other devices from somewhere and we will be lucky to get a few,” Mr Allen says.

“There are still an awful lot of questions that we need time as a school to sit down and think about before re-opening in a safe environment,” Mr Allen says.
