SDLP Social Justice Spokesperson Mark H Durkan has welcomed confirmation that a priority delivery slot provision for members of the public currently shielding, has been secured for the North.
The move comes after repeated calls for a system similar to one already rolled-out in England that has been available since lockdown began.
Said the Foyle MLA: “Many vulnerable people have contacted my office over the past number of weeks, worried and frustrated at their inability to secure online shopping delivery slots with the big supermarkets while they are shielding.
“After appealing to both the Department for Communities and Health, I am glad that this provision has now been secured.
“Asda, Iceland, Sainsbury’s and Tesco have now confirmed they will allocate a proportion of online delivery slots to this group who need it most.
“Almost 80,000 people here have been contacted by their GP advising that they should self-isolate to protect themselves from COVID-19.
“This means that they should not go out for exercise or shopping at this time.
“Fortunately, we have great local, independent traders in Derry who have stepped up to the plate and been a lifeline for people in the community.
“It is important that we remember the efforts of these local businesses and continue to support them going forward.”
He added: “It is not before time, however, that a system has now been put in place here, similar to provision already made in England, to help those shielding to secure a prioritised online delivery slot with the participating supermarkets.”
