SDLP Social Justice Spokesperson Mark H Durkan has called for expediency to distribute funds to charity organisations affected by COVID-19.
He made the call following a survey of charity leaders which found that three-quarters were approaching a funding cliff-edge.
Following the announcement of the multi-million package for the Charity Sector announced by Chancellor Rishi Sunak earlier this month, Mr Durkan wrote to Communities Minister Deirdre Hargey for clarification on the implications for the North.
Said the Foyle MLA: “The survey report carried out by Co3 has shown that 76% of charities across the North were reporting serious financial difficulties and an unstable cash flow.
“It is clear COVID-19 is causing significant damage to our vital charity sector and the Executive must step in to prevent collapse.
“They have issued a stark warning and it must be heeded.
“The Charity Sector have been left in the dark up until now without the help they so desperately need.
“So many charities are seeing an increase in demand, reduction in donations and added financial pressures as a direct result of this crisis.
“It is crucial that the Charity Sector is supported, so they in turn can continue supporting others.
“They have and continue to provide a lifeline to many vulnerable people within our communities.
“I hope that distributing these vital funds is treated with expediency to ensure charity organisations can maintain the delivery of essential services and support during this emergency.”
