Durkan calls for clarity on charity sector funding for the North

SDLP social justice spokesperson Mark H Durkan has welcomed Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s announcement of a multi-million funding package for the charity sector during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mr Durkan has written to Communities Minister Hargey to determine the implications for the North, including how much the Executive expects to receive and how funding will be allocated.

Said the Foyle MLA: “This is good news for charities, who are doing sterling work right across the North. An additional funding package will allow these organisations to continue providing for our most vulnerable at a time when it is needed most.

“This is of course welcome, indeed essential funding, for charities who have up until now been left in a state of uncertainty without the support they so desperately require.

“This boost means that our vital local organisations- from our hospices to our homeless charities- can maintain the delivery of key services within our communities during this emergency.

“Secretary of State, Brandon Lewis has said the North would receive £10 million.

“I hope Minister Hargey can confirm this and detail how it will be utilised within the charity sector across the North.”
