Sinn Fein Foyle MLA Karen Mullan

SINN Féin’s Karen Mullan has called on the Irish government to provide financial assistance to workers who live in the North but work in the south who lose their jobs as a result of the COVID-19 crisis.

Said the Foyle MLA: “There are many people living in the north who work and pay taxes in the South but are receiving no support from the Irish Government during this time of crisis.

“The Irish Government has launched a ‘COVID-19 Pandemic Unemployment Payment’ for people who have lost their jobs but at present this does not apply to people who live in the north and work in the south.

“It’s vital these cross-border workers who have lost their jobs can avail of this financial support from the Irish Government.

“I have written to the Irish government’s Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection, Regina Doherty, to ask that this support also be made available to those who live in the north and work in the south.

“I am also working closely alongside my party colleagues Padraig MacLochlainn TD and Pearse Doherty TD to provide information and guidance to those involved.”
